The recently implemented electrical safety guideline IEC61508 and addendum specific to the chemical manufacture industry IEC61511 details a safety life cycle strategy for instrumentation installed on your equipment.   This discusses the requirement for a basis of safety for your operations and the assessment of layers of preventative and mitigative measures associated with the process.  Following identification of hazards in your chemical process, you may be required to assess the adequacy of your instrument and equipment safeguards to mitigate the identified hazards.
